Buonconsiglio Castle, Trento: Discover the history, art and architecture of Trentino’s most iconic monument

Buonconsiglio Castle rises above Trento on a hilltop and is the largest and most important historic complex in the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
Originally built in the 13th century as a fortress (Castelvecchio), it became the seat of the powerful prince-bishops until 1803.
In the 14th century, Prince-Bishop George of Liechtenstein had the Torre Aquila constructed and richly decorated.
During the 15th and 16th centuries, the Magno Palazzo was added by Bernardo Clesio, featuring remarkable Renaissance frescoes by Dosso Dossi, Romanino and Fogolino.
In the 17th century, the Giunta Albertiana was built to unite the medieval and Renaissance sections into a single architectural masterpiece.

The “Cycle of the Months” in Torre Aquila: a Gothic masterpiece of medieval Trentino

Housed inside Torre Aquila, the renowned “Cycle of the Months” is a unique jewel of International Gothic art, painted between the late 1300s and early 1400s.
The series features 11 panels (March is missing), illustrating the passing of the seasons with detailed scenes of noble life and rural activities in recognisable Trentino landscapes – including the nearby Stenico Castle.
Attributed to the Bohemian painter known as Master Wenceslas, this extraordinary fresco cycle is rich in symbolic detail: farming tools, clothing, zodiac signs, and seasonal changes are all captured with remarkable precision.

Museum and Art Collections at Buonconsiglio Castle

Since 1973, Buonconsiglio Castle has been home to the Provincial Art Collections, featuring archaeological artefacts, medieval treasures, and works from the modern and contemporary eras.
Visitors can explore early Christian manuscripts, period furniture, paintings, sculptures, stained glass, and traditional Trentino craftsmanship.
The Falcon Tower displays vivid hunting frescoes, while the grand halls of the Magno Palazzo are adorned with exquisite Renaissance artworks.
